This poignant work was formerly in the collection of James Smith Budgett, who was a close friend and supporter of Smetham’s. Smetham’s small scale biblical and landscape compositions, such as the present work, convey an almost overwhelming element of spirituality. The son of a Wesleyan minister and educated at a Wesleyan-Methodist boarding school, religion played a major role throughout his life.
