FRANCESC GIMENO
24 1/8 x 17 3/4 in
Among the several pictorial campaigns that Francesc Gimeno carried out on the Costa Brava throughout his lifetime, his production in 1917 certainly stands out. In this year, the artist settled in Begur and, for a few months, in Fornells. The canvases painted there, considered the best seascapes in his corpus, share the same theme and formal characteristics as the Majorcan canvases, where he had been staying the previous year on request of his friend and protector, Dr. Bedós.
Gimeno was fascinated by the spectacular vision of the then wild cliffs of the Costa Brava: he sought unusual views with complicated access, such as the one depicted in our painting, which he describes in letters to his family as “panoramic views of charming poetry”. Our cove is narrow with a small beach and moored boats, while the El Paradís estate can be seen in the background. This composition is similar to another version of slightly smaller dimensions in the Abelló Collection, Madrid, titled El puerto de Ses Orats con la finca El Paradís (‘The port of Ses Orats with the El Paradís estate’).
