RAMON MARTÍ ALSINA
45 1/4 x 97 1/4 in
This work is a good example of the type of landscapes produced by Ramon Martí Alsina. The artist used techniques similar to those adopted by Courbet to achieve a realistic painting style, but gave his landscapes even greater presence. For instance, in this case, the human figures are a mere complement to animate the scene and to build the proportions of the segment of coastline. He opted for a large format in which the landscape is the only real protagonist. Martí championed the relevance that landscape must occupy as a pictorial genre with his work, thus opposing the hierarchy imposed by academies and tradition. The artist himself wrote on this topic: “to those who by pedantry, out of ignorance or aridity of soul, demote it to the last terminus of art, forgetting that, in doing so, they demote, with it the descriptions of nature written by the greatest poets of mankind”.
