Santiago Rusiñol made gardens his favourite theme. From 1894, when he portrayed the garden of Can Falç in Sitges and was moved by the idea of the romantic garden in Maurice Maeterlinck’s play La intrusa, he never abandoned this pictorial theme. The emotion that the gardens of Granada provoked in him in 1895 reaffirmed his enthusiasm. This last series was presented at the Salon du Champs-de-Mars in Paris in May 1896 under the title Jardins arabes de Grenade (Arab Gardens of Granada). The warm reception the paintings recevied encouraged the painter to continue with this subject, which would remain central to his work until his death in 1931.
