This fine, old mask from the Dan people of the Ivory coast, formerly in the collection of Baron Freddy Rolin, belongs to the type called gunyege and represents a masculine spirit. The mask features a bulging forehead, protruding mouth and round circular eyes designed for better vision allowing the wearer to participate in high speed running games performed during the dry season. Gunyege masks were worn in races where one runner pursues another to build strength and fighting skills. They were highly revered, considered embodiments of intense forest spirits and were passed on from generation to generation as precious and powerful heirlooms.
