In this presentation, we explore the dynamic theme of artistic and cultural exchange, showcasing works by artists whose travels and experiences shaped their vision. Highlighting both the impact of journeying European artists and the hybrid nature of Viceregal art, Cross Routes brings together exceptional pieces that reflect the fusion of European and non-European influences. Key works include two large-scale paintings by Bolivian master Leonardo Flores, a striking group of Orientalist drawings by Jean-Léon Gérôme, an exceptional head study by Paul Gauguin from his Tahitian period, and the rare perspective offered by Johann Gottfried Eiffe’s depiction of Haiti.
Additionally, we present six powerful drawings by Virginie Demont-Breton, whose work, rooted in realism and a deep connection to everyday life, touches on themes of femininity, motherhood and community. Her exploration of rural life, particularly in the Calais region, is marked by a sensitivity and realism that set her apart.
This exhibition invites viewers to engage with the narratives of travel and the intersection of cultures across both time and space.
